My projects

Variety is the spice of life! And I have certainly achieved variety in my extracurricular pursuits. Find here a selection of my miscellaneous projects— both written and multimedia work.

  • 2017— "Mauna Kea," an ancient Hawaiian saying goes. "Astonishing mountain, standing in the calm."

More than astonishing, this extinct volcano has become the sticking point of an enduring conflict between two fundamental aspects of the human experience: spirituality and discovery. Mauna Kea's height and majesty have made it both the premier location on the planet for astronomical observation, as well as the most sacred site in the Hawaiian archipelago.

  • 2017— “One nation, under the shadow of the moon.”

The country readies itself for a total solar eclipse that will cut horizontally across the continental US. Though a well documented and studied astronomical phenomenon, solar eclipses are wrapped in fascinating history and mythology. Their mystique still calls thousands of eclipse chasers into their charted path to stand in their shadow.

  • 2016— “The more we know, the more wonderful the world becomes.”

What drives scientific inquiry? From astronomical investigations to biological field work, wonder is what pushes scientists to ask questions and seek answers.

  • 2017— “Faced with a problem that was only getting worse, the residents of Ingleside decided to rise to the challenge of the water.”

Ingleside is a neighborhood in Norfolk, VA that, like many coastal communities, is buffeted by flooding. Explore this transmedia project to uncover how residents are taking action to adapt to rising sea levels.

  • 2020— “Perseverance? Are you receiving us?”

The Perseverance rover launched in the middle of a tough year for humanity, and its successful landing on Mars 8 months later showed just how perseverant humans can be. I celebrated this milestone with hand drawn Instagram web comics following Percy’s early adventures.

  • 2023— “Fascicles? That’s a 10 dollar word that you learn when you’re researching moss.”

Join me on the Rootbound podcast where I guest host an episode about plants small and big, peatlands, zombie fires, how potting soil is contributing to climate change, and many more fun facts and dazzling details.

Photography

I like to think that my photography sometimes says more than a thousand words. Here’s some select images from my adventures.
